Sunday, when I was working out in the yard, I listened to Judee Sill. She sounds like a combination of Joan Baez, and Liz, and there was some other singer-songwriter I can't recall at the moment. Judee's voice is really smooth.
It's so sad that she recorded so little before she passed away.
Anyways, the LP Forum did come back, but we can still continue this thread here....

I'm currently listening to Lily Allen's "Alright, Still". I do love a little british quirkiness. I like the way she samples various (generally older) songs/compositions, like the classical piano piece in "Littlest Things", and gives them an updated feel and a regae tone.
I can see her appealing best to the Brits than in America. How does she do in America?

I got the Neko Case - Live in Austin, Texas yesterday. CC is going to see her in concert in April. Yesterday, I was listening to Throwing Muses - University. I like the sound of that album.
I think I need to go back and listen to Tanya Donelly now.
Woo-woo, I'm the first to become full member (100 posts!)

Today it's Nellie Mckay's Pretty Little Head. I love her mix of sincerity, humour and sociopolitics.

We happened upon the group Tifah, an independent band out of Colorado, when we went to south by southwest in Austin downtown area yesterday. We bought their CD and I've been playing it.
I need to rip it and copy it to my iPod.

Hey Rob, I got Charlotte Martin's Stromata. I do like this album. I had seen it over at Fry's and I was going over there to get stuff for the Liz Phair 40th birthday T-shirt iron on patches and picked it up also.
Pretty cool.

Wicked. It's like a descending dream and I seem to love it as much now as I did then, which doesn't happen with a lot of music.

I received a friend invite on myspace from She Wants War. I like their cut Pull You Down. Check it out: http://www.myspace.com/shemakeswar. I'll probably snag their CD when they eventually release it.

I keep on getting friend invites from independent artists over on myspace. I haven't refused one yet.
When I get a friend invite and it seems like some "woman" who's trying to snare a bunch of older men into communications using msn or aol instant messenger and they say something like "I don't go out and see anyone except my roommate", I generally nuke these requests (I guess that's a bit off-topic).
Anyways, interesting exposure to independent artists over at myspace.

When I had a myspace, I never used to accept band or artists requests - they just used to annoy me the way they add you and then litter your page with comments and big banners, linking to their page. I just find it rather rude when people try and use your page as an advertisement for themselves. There's an option to turn it off, but what the bands seem to be doing now are PMing people with the same template, just changing the name, and saying "Since we love lots of the artists you like, we thought you'd like to check out our music!". It just irritates me. I like to support artists, but I like to choose that myself rather than help some band have one more friend on myspace.
Last night I was listening to Thom Yorke's The Eraser which is, in my opinion, better than any of the Radiohead albums. Maybe it's because I prefer solo artists, but it just feels more direct, sharper and focused. His voice also feels a lot more melodic on this record, whilst still accomplishing that melancholy "drone" he's pretty much famous for. The piano should probably be a bit more prominent than it is (It's usually right at the bottom of the mix, except on a few songs - which are the better songs.) and then sooner or later, one of the tracks just descends into noise, but aside that it's a really beautiful album. The best cuts are "And it rained all night", "Analyse" and overtly-political David Kelly homage "Harrowdown Hill". It's one of the best albums I own.
