GirlySound myspace page is now UP

It's not finished yet.  I'd like to get the complete cover art for both the tapes that we have on the page as well as add some links to some of our more useful Liz Phair websites, but the basic information has been uploaded and I uploaded a copy of White Babies.

I'd like to fill in as much of the story on the story on how these tapes showed up and their appearance on lizphairexperience.com, etc., but I'll probably need someone to provide some of this information to me.

I've now got 4 songs up:

I've also included the cover art that we have for the two tapes as well as the listings for each of the tapes.  Some of this was lifted from what TrampolineFrSpace posted.  I've also leveraged the information from the wikipedia page.

myspace says that I can upload up to six songs, but 4 seems to be a good number.  I had problems because "Don't Hold Your Breath" was supposed to be too big.  I reencoded it with a smaller bitrate to shrink it down a bit to fit.

I'm curious as to which songs that everyone else would select as a representative sampling of Girly Sound recordings.  To me, this seemed a good selection.  I specifically wanted to avoid using any of the same songs from the albums that Liz has released.

The Girly Sound version of Ant In Alaska has been added to the myspace page.  This one is a challenge, because it is a seven minute long song (at least the Girly Sound version is 7 minutes), which makes the compressed mp3 larger than the other ones.

In order to get the mp3s uploaded to myspace, I had to recompress the songs to get them smaller.  Evidently, myspace has some size limitations on the mp3s that you can upload.  What I did was to recompress them into smaller files in order to work around the myspace restrictions.  I'm not even sure exactly what the precise size limitation is, but I do know that 10MB is too big.  Ant In Alaska comes in at around 8MB in its newly recompressed size and it was accepted.

There is also another problem that I ran into that I don't know how to solve.  I provided pointers to the Mesmerizing Girly Sound page as well as Rob Nashville's Girly Sound page.  myspace has decided that both of them are SPAM and has invalidated both of the links.  This pisses me off.  I can only guess that they don't like geocities pages, due to the large number of pages from geocities that probably contain SPAM.

Anyways, I tried directly linking to Mesmerizing and Rob Nashville's Wild and Unwise, but now they are indirectly linked via the wikipedia page.

It's interesting the things you find out when you actually set these things up.

I did correct a problem on the myspace page.  Up until today, it was not possible to add one of the songs to your profile.  This is a "by default" setting that I hadn't bothered to verify.  Anyways, I modified the setting last night and it seems to have taken effect today.

I also reordered the list to have "Wild Thing" in second position.

Some more updates on the two sets of pages:

Over on the myspace page, I have redone all of the songs except White Babies and Wild Thing.  The other songs have been reencoded with lame to be smaller and some of the dead silence at beginning and end of the songs has been cut out.  I tried to upload versions with the embedded cover art, but that seems to give myspace the fits, so no embedded cover art.

The facebook page doesn't have the songs, but it now does have lyrics.  I picked up some off of the Internet and checked the words against what I hear.  There are two sets of lyrics for White Babies.  The answering machine version is shorter.  Here are the lyrics posted:

Some new developments.

First, we added about 4 new fans over the last couple of weeks on facebook.  I can now get statistics on the limited fan base that we have over on facebook.  It's interesting.  2/3 women and 1/3 men.  Largest group are legal adult women, but we have fans at all age groups.

Second, is the girlysound video challenge.  This is a work in progress.  I can't post audio recordings on facebook, due to the way that the fan page is setup, but we can post videos.  So what I want are fan created videos for the Girly Sound recordings.  There will be multiple "winners" as there are multiple songs. There is somewhat of a contest as I'll only post a single video per song, but there are a number of songs to choose from.

The only restriction are that you cannot violate copyright restrictions, so you cannot use anything Liz created AFTER she signed the contract with Matador.  I figure that the recordings predate the record contract, and so do the original artwork--so they're OK.  Fan created videos are OK, but don't try to repost some bootleg recording from one of her concerts 1993 or later, because that is getting too close to legal issues.

The videos will also be uploaded to the myspace page as well.

I also plan to have a section for the embedded videos over at the message board that supports the embedded videos.

I'll probably post something over at LPF, but that's just not yet a priority for me.

Any suggestions for this challenge are welcome.  This is just one of those crazy ideas that I was going to originally do myself, but I think that it would be fun as a group effort.  The challenge is to get other participants.

I was floored this morning when I logged in to facebook.

We've got our first fan video posted on the facebook page.  There is no sound and it appears as an Ad for girlysound.com, but we have a video.

• Create a focal point for Girly Sound/Liz Phair fans on twitter
