I noticed that Ken has already posted this on Mesmerizing website in the news section.

Liz Phair is one of several music artists teaming up with Banana Republic for an ad campaign this spring.

Here is the link that I got at Pitchfork:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/node/149070

and here is a link that I got for brandweek:

Ken posted some other link about the Banana Republic ad campaign.  There something about a new song that the artists are supposed to generate, so Liz will have to write something (from the pitchfork article):

Quote
But wait, there's more! In May, when the campaign's second leg kicks off, the participating artists will all release brand new tracks written specifically for the ad campaign. Banana Republic will offer all those songs for download on its website, along with videos and interviews. I, for one, can't wait to hear Liz Phair's song about pleated earth-tone khakis.

Hope everyone enjoys!

Ok, I've seen the Liz You Tube clip.  I happened to notice that this has garnered a whole new thread on LPF because it shows up in a Google search.

Interesting things:
  • Banana Republic is one of the store chains owned by The Gap Stores (stock ticker GPS)
  • Banana Republic represents 17% of sales of all stores owned by The Gap.  It is the "elite" store chain.
  • The other stores are:  The Gap, and Old Navy.  Old Navy represents the "value" store chain.  Show up on an Old Navy commercial and see what happens to your reputation.
  • Banana Republic targets customers 25-35 with higher end clothing (near luxury is the term they use)
  • Banana Republic has been hit the hardest of the Gap Store brands during the current economic downturn
  • Liz spends a fair amount of time in the video playing around with her guitars instead of actually looking like she's playing the guitars
  • Liz talks about foreign cities like London and Paris, which almost makes her come off as elitist within the framework of the current economic downturn

When I first heard of the Liz Phair Banana Republic ad campaign, I was encouraged and thought that it was a good idea.  Now that I've seen the thing on YouTube, I'm not so sure.  Liz's success, in some small part, depends on her convincing a fair number of people across the spectrum to buy her CDs.  I'm not so sure that this helps her in that goal.

Back in 1993, I was the stockboy at  Banana Republic's Bleecker street location. Man, those were the days. I remember the night Ethan Hawke showed up, looking for a hat, and asked me if I would show him around. Bad move. I tried to sell him a dress, and pretended not to know what a big star he was, or that he wasn't secretly a drag queen.

Here's an irony:  I was  complaining about the mention of London and Paris in the video and now I'll be headed to both London and Paris in early April.

Paris is really cheap to fly into right now (they've lowered their taxes or something).

Go figure.
