Here is a list of interesting details on the cover art for Funstyle:

  • googlechome.dmg is downloaded, but Google Chrome is not on taskbar.  Is this a cut against Google?
  • role models is a folder.  LA Times story says that the album is a wrath against role models
  • heart & soul is another folder.  What does it mean?
  • There's Windows something installer and Rhapsody installer things on the desktop
  • GILTF is a folder on desktop.  It means Grannies I'd Like To Fuck, according to a Google search.

The "GILTF" folder is hysterical.
I wouldn't doubt it if they were all jokes in some way.

I looked at the cover, but didn't really get a chance to look at it too closely. Just saw a horse on the wallpaper. And icons strewn about.

And I noticed that the system was running Tiger. You should upgrade to Snow Leopard, Liz!

Someone on twitter asked why she "thanks" Steven Colbert in the award acceptance speech in U Hate It.  Has she ever appeared on the Colbert Report?

I'd put my money on the folders having significance. Generally, I think people put things up on their desktops because they use the content in the folders frequently. Maybe it's Liz telling us what inspired this album: "Role Models," saying that those she looks up to helped her with the album, "Heart and Soul," saying that she's finally opening up to her audiences after a long absence, and... "GILTF," saying that there are plenty of jokes on this album. Perhaps this doesn't work perfectly, though, because it's clear there is plenty of anger within the album that doesn't seem to be portrayed in the folders.

This is probably even more of a stretch, but maybe the fact that Chrome, Windows, and Rhapsody installers are downloaded onto the desktop but not the programs onto the hard drive represents that the album was an incomplete work. I think this is more obviously represented in the image files that are open on the desktop; the "Funstyle" logo looks like it might have been professionally done, very glossy and shiny... and then the "Liz Phair" image, dark green text on a white background. Maybe juxtaposition of refined music industry product and a stripped-down, unpretentious Liz Phair?

I remember thinking the "role models" folder was maybe a torrent of the 2008 movie Role Models. I haven't seen that movie myself, but it seems like the kind of irreverent comedy that may fit her taste - judging from her sense of humor in her music. Plus, as a Hollywood resident, there's a chance she knows that whole Judd Apatow crowd.
