Liz Phair Finally Releases Girlysound Tapes
Unfortunately, they are packaged with her new album

Before releasing her landmark 1993 debut album Exile in Guyville, Liz Phair recorded three mysterious demo cassettes as Girlysound. These tapes made Phair something of an underground sensation and got her signed to Matador. A number of Girlysound tracks appeared in re-recorded and sometimes altered form on Phair's albums, but the originals have never been officially released. That's about to change.

On October 19, Rocket Science Ventures will release a double CD that'll show two very, very different sides of Liz Phair. The release will pair Funstyle, the nutso self-released album where Phair raps over Bollywood samples and makes other confounding artistic decisions, with the collection Girlysound.

Phair will also hit the road in October, playing Matador's 21st birthday party in Las Vegas as well as a string of West Coast dates. We've got all of them listed below.

Liz Phair:

10-03 Las Vegas, NV - Matador at 21
10-05 Solana Beach, CA - Belly Up Tavern
10-08 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theatre
10-10 San Francisco, CA - The Independent
10-12 Seattle, WA - Crocodile Café
10-13 Portland, OR - Doug Fir Lounge
10-15 Vancouver, British Columbia - Venue

proof that self-important indie snots of the Pitchfork variety never EVER really "got" Liz, no matter how high and mighty they proclaim themselves to be.

I feel like I woke up in a perpendicular universe. She's planning to release GS along with FS?

Hopefully this will include some new GS material. Hopefully she'll throw together a package that includes some stellar art & photos. Seems like doing so would cost extra dough, though, so I would kind of expect an austere / just the music delivery. We'll see, I guess.

I guess that means Girly Sound won't be freely available from this site.

The Spinner.com article called the Girly Sound Demos "rare." Can something be rare if anyone with a web browser and speakers can listen to the songs?

I'm going to make a wild-assed guess that the new stuff will be WAV format, 1st generation, sextophonic marvels of post-production. When held up to the sun, the disk will probably project a hologram of Liz kicking Andy Slater in the nuts. She'll be whispering backwards in the space between tracks. The mysteries of the universe will finally be revealed!

Hey guys! allmusic is already giving a track list for the Girlysound CD. it's this:

Miss Mary Mack
White Babies
Elvis Song
Valentine
Speed Racer
In Love With Yourself
Wild Thing
Love Song
Don't Hold Yr Breath
California

only 10 songs. a little dissappointing that "tell me you like me" and the other unheard song from tape 3 didn't make it, but still a good selection. i guess she's trying to draw a parallel between this songs and the ones in Funstyle. a shame "slave" and "open season" weren't included, though.

here's the link: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jbfrxzqrldde

Well, the selection is good, at least most of my favourite songs from the Girly Sound tapes are included. But yeah, "Slave" is notably absent.

No picks of any of the GS tracks that were released on EIG, WS, WCSE, etc. Too bad, I think a lot of Liz Phair fans would have loved to hear some of the earlier versions of those songs.

Not a huge fan of the songs picked here. I'd say most of these tracks are some of my least-listened to Girly Sound songs. Still, I can't complain about it. I already have them all! Favorites here are "Miss Mary Mack" and "California."

I would like to have seen Hello Sailor. It's not your grandma's anti-war song.

And where oh where is One Less Thing?

I must admit, however, that I'm thrilled to see Speed Racer on the list.

I have to admit I'm disappointed this doesn't include all the GirlySound tracks... I hate to say I'm disappointed about this release but she must know how much people would want to hear them in as perfect a quality as possible. I guess she can't have them eclipse the new album, or it would involve too much in terms of production costs, but who wouldn't pay extra for the whole thing... She's selling to her base now, we all would more than willingly pay for them all.

And we've also got to keep in mind that the full GS collection wouldn't fit onto a single CD, not in WAV format. It's a double album all by itself. Unless of course she sped the whole thing up about 40%

Chipmunk remix, anyone?

It would have been nice to see some entirely new track, some fossilized version of Mesmerizing, for instance.
