OK, just got back from Denver. This review is pretty good, pretty much captures most of the evening.
http://blogs.westword.com/backbeat/2011/01/liz_phair_at_the_bluebird_january_18_2011_denver.php He did make a mistake when Liz talked about Casey Rice's dog being recorded on "Why Can't I Breath" The song was "Mesmerizing". The set list is correct except replace "Why Can't I Breath" with "Mesmerizing" and add "Nashville". The show itself was awesome. Dynamite venue, excellent acoustics!! Place was packed. Very nice intimate, quaint atmosphere. No one was more than 100 feet from the stage. I was only about 30 feet or so. Opening act was good, female lead confessed to being a HUGE Liz fan and was stoked and honored to be opening for her. She said they had never played in front of that large of crowd before. Liz comes out SEXY as hell, I had never seen Liz live before., but all the pictures and youtube videos do not do her beauty justice, stunning woman. 4 piece band, new drummer and bass player from her earlier tour stops but same lead guitarist. By the way Greg Suran is GOOD!! No cheesy shit, he plays the songs the way they are supposed to be played, nothing more nothing less. Band was excellent , tight as hell. Liz was in very good spirits, blasted through Supernova and then asked the crowd that in honor of being a mile high in Denver, was anybody in the audience a member of the mile high club upon which she vigorously raised her own hand. Cute start to the show. Her voice was strong and spot on all night, no major pitch problems or quivering. She sounded perfect. She seriously nailed "Oh Bangladesh" . Great vocal. Crowd was VERY enthusiastic. Only minor downer for me was the fact that she didn't introduce any different tunes in her set list . I was seriously hoping for "Jeremy Engle" or maybe "Down" but the set list pretty much stuck to the set lists she performed on her December east coast dates. Minor bitch though, Liz's show and performance were "stellar". She was very at ease and was a very polished performer. Another thing, Liz always kinda downplays her guitar playing, but IMHO, she's DAMN good. The Rush riff that Suran was blowing out was hot and Liz doing her best Geddy Lee imitation was hilarious. She kinda sounded like a chipmunk. Funny as hell. The whole Tiffany Jones thing was pretty cool too. She sang "Girl's Room" almost directly at her. Just before she finished up her last song of the night, she thanked the crowd and told everyone that she'd be seeing them again this summer. I think Liz just unofficially confirmed her spot on the bill for Denver's Mile High Music Festival in August. If so , I'll be there again!
