Why on some Girlysound songs that I downloaded of the girlysound.com website, is there this wierd radio dj guy after some of the songs? Like on "Girls Girls Girls" after the song ends, some dude comes on and starts talking about how he's going to play some "Girlysound" on the radio? These weren't on the original tapes, were they?

I thought the songs on the website came from the original tapes?

The mp3s are from the original tapes that were given to Ken Lee  who runs the Mesmerizing fan site. No one is sure who this dj guy is or why it was put on the tape. I still love the way he pronounces her name as "Liz Phain" at one point.

I don't see how they could be from the original tapes if there is a radio broadcast pieced into them...

Anyway it's still great that they are finally available online, after weeks of searching...

My theory goes like this:

The tapes as they appear on this site (minus tape 3, which hasn't actually appeared anywhere on the internet in its original form) come from Ken Lee, who got them directly from a guy who got them directly from Liz. Liz is responsible for the sequencing, length of time between songs, and any strange bits like the college radio DJ. Everything you hear on those tapes, as they appear on this site, was put there by Liz. This much is not disputed. Are you with me so far?

The guy's show was apparently called "Wig Out - Dyed [Died?] Pretty."  He was apparently playing some stuff from the first Girly Sound tape, Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word To Ya Muthuh. Someone in the inner circle (Tae, Liz, or someone else) had probably given the tape to the guy, knew he was going to play it on his show, or requested it, or something. They recorded the radio show. Liz got the tape of the guy playing her stuff on the radio, or recorded it herself (wouldn't that have been such a gas for her?!), thought it was hilarious that he mispronounced her name (as "Liz PhaiN") and thought she was from Florida--which is why she included that part twice, right?--and was thrilled that he deemed her recordings "really good" and decided to put these snippets on her second tape, Girls Girls Girls.

I cannot think of any other plausible explanation. Does anyone have any different ideas? If anything, my theory proves that Girls Girls Girls was the second tape in the series, not the first. Although I think there was only ever one person who wanted to argue that it was actually the first tape.

Thoughts?

I agree.  I think she lifted the broadcast snippets and included them as part of the second tape.  Makes sense.

On a slightly different subject, how did "red ruby lips" get included on the girlysound bootlegs?  Anybody know?

My theory goes like this...

Didn't Liz once say they (her familiy or whoever) used to vacation in Florida?  I mean, there was that Urge Overkill song where she was telling a story about her summer vacation to Florida.  That probably has nothing to do with the DJ and "From Florida, Liz Phain", but that's the only other thing I thought of connecting Liz and the state.  Well, that and that she always said she wanted to go back there to play some shows.

I think it's obvious why she included it on the tape.  I can totally see her (then) laughing her ass off at the guy, so much she needed to put it on the tape twice just to say "Look, he mispronounced my name! No, really! I'll play it again, listen! You gonna smoke the rest of that?[/size] "

I'd like to have this stuff documented clearly.

There is the "lo-fi" comment at the end of track #7:  "Girls Girls Girls".  I couldn't understand what Liz says at the beginning of this track.

The "Liz Phain" comment is at the end of track #14:  "Shatter".

That sounded like: "who did that?" to me...but who knows.

Really?  I only hear one syllable.  Of course, it could be "that" or anything that sounds similar, maybe something she dubbed over at one point that just found it's way in by accident.
