Author Topic: Is the Official Liz Phair Forum Getting Bogged Down?  (Read 1308 times)

Is it just me, or does the official Liz Phair Forum seem really sluggish and slow here recently?  It just seems like it is taking forever to refresh at times.

I seem to remember that it is housed with other forums.  I guess that the other (Liza Minelli?) forums are really active.

We've got a subset of the users here that are on the other forum, so some of y'all would probably be noticing the same thing?

I've noticed it off and on that the server sometimes seems bogged down.  I haven't had too many problems since the day of that post.

It's probably got distributed  MYSQL servers on the back-end, and they take a server offline once in a while.  Next time it does that, maybe try to hit the other *.forumsunlimited.com sites and see if they're slow as well.

I think the LPF will persist for a while yet.  RUmors of its imminent demise were greatly exaggerated.

There was another purge on the Liz Phair Chat section of the LP Forum.

I responded to the WTF??? thread and that saved it, but most of the threads created from late October to early January are now gone, including the pinned thread.

Several of the most recent threads were spared, including all three (3) LP 40th birthday contest threads.

Pretty fucking weird!!!

Don't be too hard on the mods, guys...  Running a forum is hard.  There's lots of buttons.  There's also that "mouse" thing.  Lots of people nearly choke on their mouse balls, at least initially.  This peril is especially dangerous for inexperienced mods.  I refer you to Chapter 2 of the Mods Manual for Mongoloids, or the MMMMMMM for short:

Chapter Two: What to do if MMMod eat mouseball?

<there is a picture of a mod with bulging eyes, holding an inoperative mouse>

step one: DON'T DELETE ANY POSTS

<there is a picture of "good" posts, (with nonzero reply counts)**  NOTE that the concept of zero is covered in chapter 371 of the MMMMMMMM

step two: HONK YOUR NOSE

<there is a picture of a clown honking his nose>

For some additional context, Chapter one of the MMMMMM outlines what a mod should wear, and a "honkable" clown nose is essential gear for the mod.  The idea here is that, when choking on mouse balls, the last act of a mod is generally to do a "face plant" on the keyboard.  This has twin effects, only one of which is "good" by forum standards.  NOTE that mod ethics are covered in volume two of the MMMMMM, currently out of print.  In any case, when the asphyxiated mod goes face down on his keyboard, and is wearing the proper uniform, two things generally occur:

1) The fall "honks" the nose, signalling the rescue team.
2) various keys are pressed, DELETE, sadly, being among them.

At this point, whether honked of his own volition or by virtue of gravitation, the HONK of the nose will signal the rescue team, which consists of a very small car.  You would think that only a properly trained clown could fit into the rescue car, but you would be wrong.

You would also be wrong to think that the DELETED posts would ever be restored.  TAPE BACKUP is a concept that mods simply do not understand.  Well, actually they DO "understand" it, but years of kindergarten have taught them that TAPE BACKUP refers to artwork, generally crayon-based, that has fallen from the refrigerator.

Sorry false alarm (message that I just replaced with this).  Something in my browser is hosed when I use Firefox to access LP Forum.

Working on fixing it.

I'm going to continue to respond to the WTF thread.  Probably dribble it out.  That's a good idea.

Long rants have this tendency to not get noticed, maybe like they should be.

I'm having more problems this evening.  I'm getting mySQL errors, so I hope that the database isn't screwed up.

If you're having problems--you're not alone.
